Proper use of a TAVO sleeping bag
To ensure our babies have a comfortable experience in their sleeping bags, it is crucial to choose the right size. This allows for optimal heat regulation and prevents babies from overcooling. Using the wrong size sleeping bag reduces its functionality. The following rule of thumb can be used to determine the optimal size:
Rule of thumb: “Height + 10cm room to grow”
Please note that when calculating the size, subtract the neck and head length from the total body height; this will give you the required length of the sleeping bag.
The matching sleeping bag mimics the feeling of being in the womb, making the baby feel comfortable. Newborns can maintain skin-to-skin contact with their little legs and feet in the sleeping bag, creating a feeling of security for the baby. The next size (60 cm) allows little ones to practice their kicking exercises during the day as well.
At the beginning of the third month, you generally need the 70 cm size. These sleeping bags are designed for frequent diaper changes, meaning that this is when solid feeding generally begins, which means a transition for the baby's intestines.
From the ninth month onwards, you switch to the normal sleeping bag size of 90 or 110 cm.
Our tips:
It is important to note that the child should always be put in a sleeping bag to sleep; this is the only way to develop a routine of going to bed and falling asleep.
Please also note that we generally do not carry sleeping bags with sleeves in our range. A long-sleeved bodysuit under the sleeping bag is usually perfectly sufficient.
You can easily determine whether your child is cold or sweating by placing your hand between their shoulder blades. If they're sweaty between their shoulder blades, they're too warm; if they're cold, your child is cold.
What young parents need to know:
Since new studies suggest that heat buildup triggers sudden respiratory arrest in newborns, SIDS researcher Professor Christian Poets, Tübingen (DMW, Georg Thieme Verlag, Stuttgart 2004) has compiled the most important advice that young parents should know.
- If possible, let the baby sleep in the optimal back position, not on the stomach.
- The child should sleep in the parents’ bedroom – but in their own bed.
- Smoking should not be permitted in the apartment.
- A cool room temperature of 16 to 18 degrees Celsius is important. A thin blanket (or even better: a baby sleeping bag) is usually sufficient for covering. The baby is doing best when the skin between the shoulder blades feels warm but not sweaty.
- Make sure the baby cannot pull the blanket over his head.
